PS5 : How to install and remove a new SSD drive?

Today has come great news for all of us who have a PS5, and that is that the console already has compatibility with external SSDs. However, this is still available with a beta version, although it is a matter of little time before it reaches everyone. While we wait, the official PlayStation website has enabled a useful guide to change your M.2 SSD from the console, both to remove it and to install it, and I bring it to you below.

How to change the SSD of a PS5

First you have to follow certain indications, starting with that, at this moment, you need the beta version to be able to install a new M.2 SSD. Also, before messing around with it, you should touch a grounded metal object to eliminate static electricity from your body so that neither the PS5 nor the disc is in danger. Ah! And they recommend that you use an M.2 SSD with some heat dissipation mechanism. Before starting, you need:

  • A bright room with a table to work on. ✅
  • A Phillips # 1 Phillips screwdriver. ✅
  • A small flashlight (this is optional). ✅

Steps to follow to insert

  1. Go to Settings – System – System software – Console information to check that the beta version is installed.
  2. Press and hold the power button for three seconds to turn off the PS5. Remove all cables and devices from the console, and wait for the machine to cool down.
  3. Lay the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface and remove the stand (the base).
  4. Position the console so that the screw hole in the base is facing you, the PS logo is facing down, and the power button is on its left side.
  5. Place your palms near the top corners and grasp the edge of the skid plate. Gently pull the plate up and towards you (you should hear a click ). The lid is lifted, there is a rectangular cover over the expansion slot, secured with a screw at the top.

  1. Remove the slot cover screw (A), and then remove the cover.
  2. Remove the screw (B) and the spacer ring (C), and then adjust the spacer to the size of your M.2 SSD.
  3. Holding the edge of your M.2 SSD, align it with the notch in the expansion slot, and then, starting diagonally up, insert it firmly all the way in (if your drive is not properly or firmly inserted, you could damage the drive or the console ).

  1. Tilt the SSD drive down and fix it with screws.
  2. Attach the expansion slot cover and tighten the screw from earlier.
  3. Replace the PS5 board by placing it slightly away (about 2 centimeters) from the top edge and sliding it into place. You will hear a click when the lid is correctly attached.
  4. Connect the power cable, the rest of the cables and the base, and turn on the console. When it is turned on, the guide for formatting the disk will appear. Follow the onscreen instructions to format the SSD.
