At GDC, The Coalition showed the Alpha Point technical demo made with Unreal Engine 5 and optimized for Xbox Series X. The presentation took place behind closed doors and was not made public, however PC Gamer tells us some details about the tech demo .
The demo is described as ” very short ” and in fact features only a diamond floating in the air in a setting with rocks, earth and sand, vaguely reminiscent of the landscapes seen in the Lumen in the Land of Nanite technical demo for PS5 , always built with Unreal Engine 5.
Kate Rayner, technical director of The Coalition, says that the studio is still in the very early stages of approach with the new Engine, however, Microsoft’s proximity to Epic Games allows the team to collaborate with the company to learn the secrets of optimization on the Xbox Series X.
The Alpha Point demo started as an experiment with Unreal Engine 4 and was only later converted to Unreal Engine 5. Technical Art Director Colin Penty says that most of the graphic assets are made with a number of triangles between 300,000 and 500,000, about 15 times the number of triangles present on average in the assets of Gears 5, released in 2019.
The studio is also experimenting with physics and lighting , as well as working on the rendering of the characters, in this regard Colin Penty smiles thinking that ” the eyelashes of a character we made contain about 3,500 triangles, which is the amount needed to create all era an entire character on Xbox 360. “
In closing, the technical managers say they are satisfied with the results achieved and think that the games in Unreal Engine 5 will have an “incredible look” on Xbox Series X / S. At the moment the tests also continue on the resolution, the framerate and other technical aspects, however the team clarifies that Alpha Point is only a technical demo , all the graphic material has been created for this occasion and there are no plans to create a full game based on this tech demo.
