Double Fine wants to work on something new and surprising after Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2 will finally debut and continue the adventure of Razputin Aquato. As this is a campaign-focused game and there are no plans for DLC so far, it is normal to think that Double Fine Productions is already working on a new game. Will it be a remastering? Will it be a completely new title? The studio talked about it.

It’s normal that even before a game debuts, your development studio is already working on the next project. After how well Psychonauts 2 is doing with criticism and now financially supported by Microsoft, there is no doubt that Double Fine Productions will continue to develop games and it looks like their next game will be brand new.

WILL DOUBLE FINE PRODUCTIONS WORK ON A NEW IP?

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, the leader of Double Fine Productions, Tim Schafer, acknowledged the pleasure he felt working in recent years on old franchises of the studio, precisely as Psychonauts 2 (sequel) and the remastering of Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle and described the feeling as returning to something comfortable.

However, plans appear to be different for future projects, as Schafer said he and the team are “really excited to do something completely new that will be completely amazing to people.”

MICROSOFT HAS HONORED THE DEAL WITH DOUBLE FINE PRODUCTIONS

Double Fine Productions since 2019 belongs to Microsoft and is part of Xbox Game Studios, so all future projects of the studio will be financed by the technology giant.

Regarding this deal, Schafer is happy, since he says that the company “has kept its word in terms of what they said before the acquisition.” The creative reiterated that so far they have received the resources, but the study has been completely in charge of the creative side, although he clarified that it had the support of Microsoft to test the accessibility and mental health of Psychonauts.

It is important to mention that clues have already emerged that Double Fine Productions would be working on an unannounced triple-A project and it could well be from a new IP, as the studio would like. However, for this reason, the possibility of working on remasters should not be ruled out, especially when Xbox already mentioned that it would not have problems with it. There is also the possibility that the developer will work on multiple projects after Psychonauts 2 .

“There was a period at the end of Psychonauts 2 where we had all hands working on the completion of the game [Psychonauts 2], but we’re definitely going back to [working on] multiple projects afterwards,” Schafer commented.

What do you expect from this study? Are you excited about the future of Double Fine Productions? Tell us in the comments.

Psychonauts 2 will debut Wednesday, August 25, 2021, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, and PC.
