Ron Gilbert took ideas from the chapters not written by him for Return to Monkey Island, considering them in the canon of the series.
As promised in an old post, for Return to Monkey Island , Ron Gilbert took some ideas from the chapters not written by him, the ones he considers the best. Furthermore, he confirmed that they are not out of the canon of the series … at least it is not the third chapter.
Gilbert had previously talked about a potential new Monkey Island. That is, she had outlined his vision of what it should have been like. She had called him Monkey Island 3a and, although she had declared that all the post LeChuck’s Revenge games did not exist in her Monkey Island universe and that his desire was to pick up where he left off, he would still have stolen some ideas and characters from the other games.
The Return of Monkey Island introductory trailer shows that it has kept its promise, as it features the Murray skull, introduced in the series in The Curse of Monkey Island.
That said, Gilbert has stated that the third Monkey Island will not come out of the canon of the series and that he and his team have been very careful in that regard.
Therefore, the will to cancel everything he did not do directly seems to have been mitigated. On the other hand, the third episode was still a good point and click adventure, even if it didn’t reach the heights of the first two. We’ll see what will become of the much worse Escape from Monkey Island, hated by almost all fans of the series, and TellTale’s Tales of Monkey Island which, according to many, had well taken the spirit of the originals.
